ERC joins MANRS

Through significant diligence by the ERC Network team lead by Chuck McCurry, the ERC has joined MANRS (www.manrs.org) after being certified as an “Internet Operator”. The ERC is the 82nd US-based Internet Service Provider (ISP) to obtain this certification out of 529 worldwide. MANRS is a global initiative supported by the Internet Society, that “..provides crucial fixes to reduce the most common routing threats.”

ISPs can and do create issues within the Internet by poor practices and configurations. The basic premise of MANRS is that it is our mutual job with other ISPs to participate in the global Internet as best as possible and be a good-neighbor to the rest of the BGP universe. ERC Broadband receives Corporate Impact Award

The ERC is proud to announce it has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Corporate Impact Award at the NC Tech Awards. Winners were recognized at the annual awards gala on Thursday, Nov 9, in Durham. The NC Tech Awards is North Carolina’s only statewide technology awards program recognizing companies and individuals who have characterized excellence, innovation, and leadership.

Hunter Goosmann, ERC’s Executive Director and CEO, said, “This is a wonderful affirmation of the role the ERC team plays in communities across western North Carolina.”

Former ERC Employee Max Lennon Dies

It is with sadness that we share the news that a former ERC employee has passed away. Max Lennon, who worked with the ERC until 2004 and then started the partner organization Education & Research Services (also nonprofit) where he served as President, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016.
The ERC offers its deepest condolences to his family.
His funeral will be Monday, December 5, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., at Asheville First Baptist Church.

Network Management Update

To all ERC customers, please be aware of the change to the ERC network management policy.

“The ERC blocks Character Generator Protocol (CHARGEN) at the ERC network edge.”

This change is due to the lack of benign uses between networks and it’s predominant abuse. Should any ERC customer have any question, concern, or issue with this, then please contact the ERC at your convenience.

Jo Cline

It is with sadness that the ERC mourns the passing of the wife of one of its Directors. Jo Cline, co-founder of the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute (PARI) alongside her husband of 54 years (ERC Board member Don Cline), passed away on July 25 in Greensboro, NC. Jo is lovingly remembered as the “First Lady of PARI”. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Jo Cline Memorial Fund at PARI (1 PARI Drive, Rosman, NC 28772).

Tanya Riddle Operations Manager

The ERC is pleased to announce that Tanya Riddle has been promoted to Operations Manager. Tanya is a long-term employee, having spent 9 and a half years performing different roles for the ERC. Over the past few years, she has been managing much of the daily operations. Please join all of us in congratulating Tanya on this promotion.

After working with the ERC for several months, and having valued his contributions to the team, the decision was made to extend an offer and to our delight, Mr. Casey accepted.

The ERC is very thankful. And, it’s not to do with this time of year. We are thankful for each of you – our customers, our partners, our vendors, our subcontractors, our advisors, our friends. By working with us, each of you help us succeed. The ERC has long touted itself as a community network. Like the Internet, ERC Broadband is comprised of all our connections throughout communities across western North Carolina. Each connection we make, each extension of the network infrastructure, each new drop enables us to serve you – the communities in which we work – better.

ERC is top Communications Technology company

It is with great pride that the ERC announces it was named the 2014 top Communications Technology company at the NC Tech Awards last night in Raleigh. We are all very proud of our regional network, and this is a fantastic stamp of approval for our team’s efforts. Thanks to all who supported the ERC in this award.
